LKAB Wassara wanted to replace their existing application for measuring boreholes due to usability concerns. The application is primarily aimed for the Kiruna mine, the world’s largest iron mine, with a secondary goal of exporting the instrument abroad. The new application was based on interviews and user testing with miners and supervisors during separate stages of the design process. The application was developed for Algiz 10X, a handheld device used by LKAB Wassara. It was crucial to take the limited dimensions of the screen into consideration, roughly 26 cm or 10 inches diagonally. Also, the miners often use gloves when conducting measurements which had implications for the size of the touch targets. At its core the app was based on the design framework of Windows 365 which was customized to align with Wassara’s visual identity.
